After years of speculation and prep, the Phillies have finally landed their celebrity.
It took until the last day of February, but the Phils have consented to a 13-year deal worth $330 million with Bryce Harper, a source tells NBC Sports Philadelphia Phillies insider Jim Salisbury.
Manny Machado served as the pace car, agreeing on Feb. 19 into some 10-year, $300 million deal with the Padres. At one point in the offseason, it seemed the Phils were prioritizing Machado, but that valuation was too high for his or her liking. Harper brings more of an amusement factor than Machado and will probably be better for business, which factored into the price . Harper is a match since he adds power that is left-handed.
From the days leading up to the Phillies’ agreement with Harper, he had been attached to the Dodgers, a suitor because of their deep pockets, proximity to Harper’s Las Vegas home and their capacity. But money always talks along with the Phillies’ offer was the wealthiest.
