After years of speculation and prep, the Phillies have finally landed their celebrity.
It took until the last day of February, but the Phils have agreed to some 13-year deal worth $330 million with Bryce Harper, a source tells NBC Sports Philadelphia Phillies insider Jim Salisbury.
Manny Machado served as the rate car, agreeing on Feb. 19 into a 10-year, $300 million deal with the Padres. At one point in the offseason, it seemed Machado was being prioritized by the Phils, but that valuation was too high for their liking. Harper will probably be better for company, which factored into the price tag and brings more of an entertainment factor. In certain ways, Harper is also a fit since he adds left-handed power.
In the days leading up with Harper to the Phillies’ agreement, he had been connected to the Dodgers, a suitor due to their deep pockets to the Las Vegas home of Harper and their capacity. But money always talks and the Phillies’ offer was the wealthiest.
