At each turn this offseason, the Los Angeles Rams downplayed Todd Gurley’s knee position, which divides him down the stretch and into the playoffs last season.
Gurley’s personal coach, Travelle Gaines, confirmed to CBS Sports’ Dave Richard lately that the running back has arthritic issues stemming from an ACL tear in college, but downplayed the effect on Gurley’s playwith. “Everybody knew when Todd came from Georgia that there could be a kind of arthritic component to his knee, which is an element of each surgery whether it’s a shoulder, a knee, an arm,” Gaines said late last week. “He’s now at the year-five mark, all we are doing is managing that. If we could pound him less in the offseason while maintaining his weight down, working on his intensity, working on his agility in short locations, that is likely to give him a much better chance to be healthy Weeks 14 through 17 when they count.”
Section of handling Gurley’s workload is that the running back shedding weight and maintaining down the grind in the offseason.
“It was a collective decision for him to play with a little lighter this year, not due to injuries, just because I just feel he is among the faster players in the league,” Gaines said. “He does not have to play at 224 — 218 is just six pounds , therefore I wanted to reduce his body fat just a little bit and get him to the point where he’s a tad smaller therefore he could be a tad quicker and a little bit larger out of a lean muscle mass perspective. He is going from essentially 10 percent body fat to seven per cent body fat”
Gurley’s knee problem is an essential subject of the Rams’ offseason and will continue to be games start until the running back demonstrates healthy for the entire season.
Questions regarding Gurley’s playing time, and if the L.A. training staff plans to curtail his traces escalated with the drafting of Darrell Henderson from the third round. Gaines dismissed the thought that the accession of backs would influence Gurley’s snaps.
“It has never been advised to me that there’s a strategy to reduce his workload come Week 1,” Gaines said. “At the end of the day, you need solid running backs, and they grabbed a home-run running in the third round. … If you saw the games this past year, Todd typically sat out two to three series this past year. I really don’t see anything changing with that, so you want a back who can catch, and that I believe Darrell averaged about 9.0 yards per carry, a home-run type guy.”
Of course, the Rams do not need to let the trainer of Gurley know they plan to reduce his touches.
Until the season begins, and we see the Rams’ strategy for Gurley in action, questions will last. About that arthritic knee will hold up, and after the first couple of weeks, lingering queries will probably be pondered.
