New York Jets quarterback Trevor Siemian is out for the year with a left ankle injury that is likely to need surgery, according to trainer Adam Gase.
Siemian, filling for ill Sam Darnold, was injured in the second quarter of Monday night’s loss to the Cleveland Browns. Even the New York Daily News reported he had ligament damage but did not break his arm.
A sombre Gase announced that Darnold had mononucleosis and announced Siemian the newcomer.
He’ll now turn later Darnold was sidelined to second-year player Luke Falk, who had been raised from the practice squad. The Tennessee Titans chosen Falk from the sixth round the 2018 draft.
Darnold Won’t play on Sunday against the New England Patriots, and the Jets have a bye. He’s likely to miss based upon his recovery.
Gase shown on Tuesday that Darnold was back at the team facility.
“He is feeling better. The doctors are allowing us understand how to proceed together along with him” Gase said.
Gase added that wide receiver Demaryius Thomas (knee/hamstring) and linebacker Jordan Jenkins (calf) have been monitored on a week-to-week basis. Linebacker C.J. Mosley is daily using a groin injury.
The first-year Jets coach also addressed the status of cornerback Trumaine Johnson, who didn’t find action in Monday night’s 23-3 loss until late in the fourth quarter. Back in March 2018, Johnson signed a five-year, $72.5m arrangement with the Jets, $45m of it ensured.
“We just chose not to play with him ,” Gase said, adding it was not for disciplinary measures.
