England coach Eddie Jones has cautioned the typhoon coming across Asia might have a major disturbance in the World Cup but says he has contingency plans in place to manage this.
Typhoon Faxai moved shore over the Pacific towards eastern Japan on Saturday, threatening to make landfall near Tokyo the Japan Meteorological Agency said.
England are expected to leave for Japan on Sunday along with also the season typhoon – packing winds of up to 180kph – is anticipated to reach areas of the Kanto area between Sunday and early Monday.
Tournament organisers have planned for the possibility of having to relocate teams or to transfer matches to places.
The stadiums to England’s first two games, against Tonga in Sapporo and the United States at Kobe, have roofs and Jones says the group will train indoors on turf if necessary.
“It’s likely to influence the World Cup, there is little doubt about it,” Jones said following his negative 37-0 win over Italy in England’s final warm-up match in Newcastle.
“You have only got to ride with it, be adaptable and figure out how you can handle the circumstance.
“After the typhoon comes, you just can’t go outside. It’s basically a lock-down. Between being very violent to quite mild, it may vary.
“The issue is that can’t go outdoors but we have got thoughts of what we do whether a typhoon stopped us coaching outdoors. We are going to train on artificial turf inside.”
Jones is preparing to get a marked change in conditions, after enjoying with four warm-up games on pitches.
Jones, with a Japanese-American mother and is married to Hiroko Jones, a woman he met while teaching in Sydney, is knowledgeable about the perils, with lived for periods in Japan.
He coached club teams prior to being appointed as head coach of the national team before the 2015 Rugby World Cup in 2012.
“South Africa played Japan [on Friday] and it had been very hot and very humid,” he explained. “There was plenty of lost ball, it had been rather greasy, which could increase the amount of hanging”
