England coach Eddie Jones has cautioned the typhoon might have a major disturbance on the World Cup in Japan, however, says he has contingency plans in place.
Typhoon Faxai moved shore on the Pacific towards Japan on Saturday, threatening to make landfall near Tokyo the Japan Meteorological Agency said.
England are due to depart on Sunday for Japan along with the year’s 15th typhoon – packing winds up to 180kph – is expected to reach coastal areas of the Kanto region between late Sunday and early Monday.
Tournament organisers have planned for the chance of having to relocate groups from their foundations or matches to unique places.
The stadiums to England’s first two games, from the usa at Kobe and Tonga at Sapporo, have roofs and Jones claims the team will train indoors on synthetic turf.
“It’s likely to affect the World Cup, there’s little doubt about it,” Jones said after his side’s 37-0 win over Italy at England’s final warm-up game in Newcastle.
“You have only got to ride with it, be adaptable and figure out how it is possible to handle the circumstance.
“After the typhoon comes, you just can not go outdoors. It’s basically a lock-down. Between being very violent to quite mild, it may vary.
“The problem is that can’t go outdoors but we’ve got thoughts of what we do if a typhoon stopped us training outdoors. We’ll train on artificial turf indoors.”
After playing four warm-up matches on pitches that are tender, Jones is preparing to get a change in conditions.
Jones, who has a Japanese-American mother and is married to Hiroko Jones, a Western woman he met while teaching at Sydney, is familiar with the potential perils, with lived for long periods in Japan.
Before being appointed in 2012 as head coach of the national team before the 2015 Rugby World 26, he coached club teams.
“South Africa played with Japan [on Friday] and it had been quite hot and very humid,” he said. “There was a lot of lost ball, it was quite fatty, which could raise the amount of kicking.”
