Jon Rahm has already set his sights on a Spanish three-peat after successfully defending his Open de Espana title with a five-shot victory in Madrid.
Rahm became the fastest Spaniard to reach European Tour victories and moved top of the Hurry to Dubai standings.
The world No 5 required a direct and extended his advantage with four birdies and an eagle , having a penultimate-hole bogey his only blemish in a 66.
I am not happy I three-putted 17, Rahm said. I wanted to move bogey-free, but at the close of the afternoon I did the most important thing, I managed to effectively defend it in front of the home audience.
It might not be the strongest field yet but its always really hard for me to keep everything in check and to play with the weekend that I did for these would be really fun.
I cant wait for next season to come back and do it three times. The crowd was unlike anything else. Audiences love golf plus they love us coming back.
I play with a great deal of tournaments during the year which dont get so much attendance, so it reveals how much Spain needs golfing, just how much they need more occasions and just how much they like it. It is great for the game of golf, it is fantastic for Spain and hopefully it can only get larger.
Rahms closest challenge came before completing his 66 from Rafa Cabrera Bello, that opened with 12 consecutive pars on the last day.
I would have liked to get a birdies early to put some pressure on Jon, however didnt happen today, Rahm said. I needed to hang in there, struggle for the next place and I was quite happy that the birdies came at the conclusion.
He had a major lead from the start. You could observe that dip in half after three or four holes and it alters your view – but that didnt happen, it went another way
Seven shots proved to be a commanding lead, once he eagled four. It had been his tournament to lose and he played good. All I could do was concentrate on my ball, so try and finish next and I was able to do that.
