After defending his Open de Espana title using a five-shot victory in Madrid jon Rahm has set his sights in a Spanish three-peat.
Rahm became the Spaniard to reach European Tour victories and proceeded top of the Hurry following a dominant display on home ground to Dubai standings.
The world extended his advantage with four birdies and an eagle along having a penultimate-hole bogey and required a five-stroke direct his single blemish in an five-under 66.
I am happy I three-putted 17, Rahm said. I wished to go bogey-free, but at the end of the day I did the most major thing, I managed to effectively defend it in the front of the home crowd.
It may not be the strongest field yet but its always very difficult for me to keep everything in check and to play the weekend I did for these is always really enjoyable.
I cant wait for next season to return and do it three times. The audience was anything else. Audiences love golf and they love us coming backagain.
I play a whole lot of tournaments through the year that dont get this much attendance, so it reveals just how much Spain needs golf, how much they desire more occasions and how much they enjoy it. It is fantastic for the game of golf, its terrific for Spain and hopefully it can only get larger.
The closest battle of rahm came prior to finishing his bogey-free 66 together using five birdies in his closing six 33, from Rafa Cabrera Bello, who started with 12 consecutive pars on the final day.
Id have liked to find some birdies early to place some stress on Jon, however, that didnt happen today, Rahm said. I needed to hang in there, fight for the next place and I was very happy that the birdies came in the end.
He had a major lead from the start. You could see that dip in half after three or four holes and it changes your perspective – but that did not occur, but it went the other way.
Seven shots proved to be a commanding lead once he eagled four. It was his championship to lose and that he played great. All I could do was concentrate on my ball, so attempt to finish second and I managed to do that.
