Tampa Bay asserted their first win of the newest NFL season, holding Carolina’s final drive off to claim.
With time running out trailing by six in their home season opener, Cam Newton directed Carolina in a drill.
They looked to be heading to get a first win of the season, or at least overtime, as they attained the redzone, but the Buccaneers came up with an overdue goal-line stand to make sure Newton, despite 324 passing yards, was held without a touchdown for the second consecutive week.
Lightning from the field meant the match was delayed for 25 minutes in the first quarter, but the Bucs held to give new head coach Bruce Arians his first victory since taking control
While Jameis Winston threw for 208 yards as Tampa Bay held Newton in check when it mattered most, the Panthers quarterback came up with another fumble as he suffered an eighth successive defeat peyton Barber ran for 82 yards and a 16-yard touchdown.
The Panthers required four field goals from a Barber safety, along with Matt Gay, to stand their 14 points up.
Chris Godwin was the safety blanket of Winston, the receiver scored the game’s only touchdown and hauled in eight catches for 121 yards since the Bucs won despite converting just 2 of 12 first downs.
It was just another night of pity, culminating at the drive which fell short despite fractures. Afterwards he took a snap from the wildcat formation to take over on downs on fourth down play from the two, Christian McCaffrey stopped.
The Buccaneers (1-1) got plenty of strain Newton along with three sacks coming from Shaquil Barrett. They also held McCaffrey into 53 total yards from scrimmage once he racked up 209 yards and 2 touchdowns from the season-opener against the Los Angeles Rams.
