It’d be a”mistake” to punish Manchester City midfielder Bernardo Silva to get a tweet about team-mate Benjamin Mendy, states manager Pep Guardiola.
After Mendy was contrasted to a personality on a package of Conguitos City was written to by the Football Association – a candy brand available in Spain and Portugal.
“There are lots of situations with white folks where a cartoon will seem like,” Guardiola explained. “The response from Mendy was apparent. They’re joking all the time.”
The article was published at 12:44 BST on Sunday but was deleted at 13:30, even though Portugal international Bernardo later tweeted:”can’t even joke with a buddy these days.”
Silva, 25, played the entire 90 minutes of City’s 3-0 win on Tuesday at Preston in the Carabao Cup third round.
Guardiola said:”Bernardo is one of the most beautiful people I have met in my entire life. He speaks five or even four languages – that’s the very perfect way to comprehend how open-minded he’s.
“Among his very best friends is Mendy. He is just like a brother. He took an image of Benjamin if he was young and connected it with this cartoon, quite like the picture.”
“When they (the FA) need to do this (talk to Silva), Bernardo is going to be open to talk. But you have to know which individual you’re talking about.
“If something happens it will be a mistake since Bernardo is an outstanding individual. It’s not anything to do with color of the skin or nationality.”
Charity Kick It Out has called to behave after the governing body said it had been exploring.
