When falling from the American Grand National in Far Hills on Saturday evening wicklow Brave lost his life.
The remarkable Willie Mullins-trained 10-year-old has been on the point of adding a second triumph to his list after he dropped with the race in his mercy at the last.
The Brain Power of nicky Henderson went on to land the spoils.
An winner of 17 of his 59 races, he also won the Irish St Leger beneath Frankie Dettori at 2016, the 2015 County Hurdle along with the 2017 Punchestown Champion Hurdle.
A statement posted on the Far Hills Twitter account read:Wicklow Brave dropped in the last fence of the Grand National. NJ State Veterinarian Dr. Stacey Romano reported he sustained a fractured right shoulder and was transported to the stable place, where he had been euthanized.
Far Hills race meeting chairman Guy Torsilieri stated:Were sad to have lost such a champion today. Our thoughts are with all of their connections, both the racing community and the enthusiasts and Wicklow Braves owners. It was tragic for all people.
