Graham Clark talks to Grade One-winning jockey Bryony Frost about the forthcoming season and her career.
She won the conditional jockeys championship last year, hit the headlines along with Frodon in Cheltenham in March and has emerged as one of the very talked-about youthful riders in the game, so listening to Bryony Frosts perspectives on life and racing Generally is entertaining and informative:
You just can not represent that type of feeling after you cross the line. You dont know where the line is, but heads begin to disappear and all I have is Frodons earsflat back, his mane into my head and all Ive seen is just a blur of green and somewhere up there is the lineup and thats all were heading to. It is crossed by you and also the entire world disappears for a moment. You dont acknowledge where you are, what race it is is him and how brave hes been. It was a joyful moment – thats the feeling that came .
We stopped to get a coke and a burger at the services in the way home and I had a note on that car that stated,we saw it on the telly, which was class, things like that. They took the time, although I have not got a clue who they were. You here a few stories. If I see how I view these men and the main reason Im doing it and will let people into my world just a tiny bit, that is mega for me personally. We live to make.
Its the Gold Cup that is amateur. I recall watching him the year before using Victoria (Pendleton) believing Id just like to ride him because hes your old chap at just six oclock in the day – this is just like his metaphor of man – hed have his whiskey in six, sat in a large armchair and he would just place the world to rights. That was him and he only looked the whole way round. This was just a mega day and that I thought it likely would not get better than that.
I wouldnt be saying that Ive won Grade Ones, I wouldnt have been placed into any kind of limelight if it was not for Paul and him giving me the help along with his associates. Theyve been like a second family here. From being under the wing of them my riding has enhanced.
As a result, your work is to improve your horses career, thats what you are employed to perform and that is the reason you love the job, because every time you sit on a horse, if you have a one-litre engine or a V8, you are trying to make him the very best he can be.
I have always done me. I have never attempted to style myself on anybody or copy anyone. I try to learn from everyone and anyone – you have got to make yourself a sponge. To any kid in life seeking to do this, you have got to attempt to surround yourself with individuals who are good at their jobs. Familiarizing yourself with winners if youd like to be close to the very top.
To come to Sandown (for the previous day of the season) was a major moment for me personally, I had been on 49 champions – I actually would have loved to get to 50. We knew we had the title in the bag, that was completed so everyone was coming up to say we have a got a fiver on Black and you Corton and that I was likeOK but he came right back on song. He put me back on cloud nine ahead and gave me my lifes ideal twist. I owe a lot to him and it was mega to acquire the name.
I have always believed its opinions that will prevent you in the days conclusion. Theyre not reality, and that means you dont have to pay attention to them. For me, if you are good enough, then youll find the chances. Paul does not offer me rides since Im a girl, ideally he offers rides to me because I execute my directions on course and strive hard and do. Thats the reason . I can not change it, Im a woman, thats me.
(A journalist) phoned me up and wanted to do an interview, and his first question was, women struggle since theyre not as powerful as guys and my hackles went up immediately. I said, request that you talk to me and Im going to give a metaphor to you. He was somewhat bemused, but statedall right. I said, youve got a rugby player and a top jockey, so name me a soccer player, which he did, and I said, name me a leading jockey and he saidDicky (Richard) Johnson, since hes our best one. I said OK, theyre going to deadlift today, who is likely to lift the weight and he said,of course, the rugby player, so I asked why and he said, because hes more powerful. I said, straight line for a mile, who do you believe will be tired at the end of it and were going to put them ? . The player was said by him since he doesnt know how to ride a horse and that I asked, whys thathe ummed and ahhed for a minute and said, its approach. And I said, well, I just answered your question and put the phone down on him.
