Jonny Cooper’s dismissal at the first half the All-Ireland final changed the complex of the decider, along in the second half, Kerry fought back together with the numerical edge to save a draw.
Like any red card on a large stage, it was subject to much disagreement, but the Sky Sports panel had been in agreement referee David Gough made the choice that is right from the awarding of 2 yellows.
“Jonny is a combative player, we understand that,” said ex-Dublin celebrity Senan Connell.
“He likes to make contact. He is very aggressive in the tackle. There should have been a call from Jim Gavin to take off him.
“In David Gough’s head, there’s an accumulation of fouls here. What else, once you’re following giving a specific amount of frees you have to be disciplined in the undertake. I mentioned it in studio [following the ], Jonny is going to get to be quite careful here. The fouls will hurt him, and they did in the end.
“[It was] persistent fouling and then he deserved it.”
Peter Canavan agreed, implying the Dublin direction ought to have moved the Na Fianna guard off David Clifford after his reservation.
“Right away, he needed to be taken off him [Clifford], since Jonny Cooper can not play any other manner but you need to be full-blooded and strike the ball,” said Canavan.
“But we are waiting for many years now to see Jim Gavin reveal some symptoms of complacency – did he even have too much trust in Jonny Cooper? Why did not he move Michael Fitzsimons ? David Clifford was playing really well.”
Sky Sports’ sideline reporter Damian Lawlor added Gough’s thought-process and circumstance:
Lawlor explained:”I’ve been linked up to this referee David Gough throughout the match, also to be fair to him, while it was a tough decision for him to create in an All-Ireland final, he had warned Jonny Cooper three times during the first half about repeat infringements occurring.”
Actually Cooper’s dismissal has been two cards instead of a direct red means he is going to be free to play in the replay.
