Joe Root has to think about giving the England captaincy to enable him to regain his form after a disappointing Ashes, as stated by former Test batsman Rob Key.
Root was outside for a duck for the third time in as many matches until Australia retained the Ashes by accepting a 2-1 series lead with a success in the first Test.
Despite having overseen England’s initial failure to acquire a home Ashes series as 2001, Root said that he”certainly” remains the ideal person to lead the side forward, starting with the fifth and final Test at the Oval on Thursday.
“At a certain stage, Joe Root has to work out whether the captaincy affects his game,” Essential told Sky Sports News. “Forget both sides and everything else. ‘Can I be successful and play as a priest and a batsman as I have been in the past?’
“I believe his ordinary before he was 50 and it’s since fallen to 40. That might be just due to ailments, but this is what he must answer – and he could answer this.
“Whenever you request any sportsperson that question about whether they would like to continue, they are always likely to say’yes’ straight away, otherwise it is just like giving up – and sportspeople do not like giving up. But at some stage, Joe Root will have to sit down and really think about if he would like to carry on and if he can be the batsman he would like to become as a captain.”
Root has 30.87 runs throughout the series, a figure considerably below his career mark of 48.03, although the astonishing kind of Australia’s Steve Smith has further emphasised the England captain’s battles.
The weakness of England’s top-order batting compelled Root to promote himself a location out of his favorite No. 4 position at the beginning of the show, which makes him exposed to some new ball in the palms of Australia’s exceptionally notable quick bowling lineup.
The former England team-mate Jonathan Trott of root believes that accountability for the defeat must be shared, and that there are a lack of alternatives.
“I would like to see him remain in the function,” Trott told Sky Sports News. “I believe there’s no better option from the England side to become captain. I believe he’s a pure choice.
“I think he has looked really very good occasionally within this set. He’s got some wonderful deliveries and he’ll be hurting a bit with respect to not having the capability to perform the job and find those Ashes back, but it’s a team effort – it’s not simply down to the captain when he moves out there with this bat. It’s up to everybody.
“I think he is the perfect guy for the job. If he wishes to continue to accomplish this, I’d certainly him back.”
